Summary: In his third year at Hogwarts, Harry learns that Sirius Black, a dangerous prisoner who escaped from Azkaban, is apparently hunting him. It is believed that Sirius was a close friend of Harry’s parents and betrayed them to Voldemort. Meanwhile, Harry begins studying advanced magic, including how to summon a Patronus, a defensive charm that repels dark creatures called Dementors. Over time, Harry uncovers the truth: Sirius is his godfather and was framed for betraying the Potters by Peter Pettigrew, another of their friends. Pettigrew had faked his own death and was living in disguise as Ron’s pet rat. Harry helps Sirius escape from capture, but Pettigrew evades justice.
